MONTEVALLO – Montevallo Main Street is hosting a three-month series of collaborative learning sessions for entrepreneurs that will be facilitated through the Co.Starters program this fall.

This peer-driven program was created with an end game in mind that will equip budding entrepreneurs with the knowledge they need to take their idea and not just see it to fruition, but also make sure it has a stable start and will be around long term.

Herman Lehman, Main Street Board member and business owner himself, spearheaded the idea to bring Co-Starters to Montevallo. The Main Street organization had noticed that sometimes new businesses would end up closing due to being underprepared. The idea is to give potential investors in new businesses the ability to get their ducks in a row before they go through with investment so they will be more successful. While the city hopes to see the benefits of the program in its own area, the program has also been promoted countywide.

“We believe a rising tide lifts all boats,” Main Street Executive Director Courtney Bennet said, “so, strengthening our local business community is going to be beneficial to Main Street no matter what.”

The plan is to offer the program twice a year, and currently, interested parties can join this inaugural series for $99.

“We’d love to see some of our empty storefronts filled, and our hope is that one of the graduates would invest in a storefront in Montevallo,” she said.

The sessions will happen every Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m. starting Tuesday, Sept. 13 for nine weeks at the Michael E. Stephens Business School at the University of Montevallo.

Each week the group will have a special guest who will be able to speak on a specific topic designed to get budding business owners to dig deeper into what their business will need to be successful. With topics like “Planning for Financial Growth,” “Discovering the Bottom Line” and “Getting the Relationship Right,” as well as an atmosphere that creates an opportunity for discussion and critique among peers, the program hopes to lead to positive growth in the area.

The guest speakers for each week are local business owners that have practical experience in each topic that will be presented each week. This will give the participants access to people who have already been where they are now. These speakers include Susan Leman of Keller Williams and John Wolsoncroft of Fastest Labs of South Birmingham to name a couple.

The facilitator for the course is Montevallo Main Street member and local Maggie Hall. She herself is a local business owner and a financial planner, and because of her experience and her love of her community, she is equipped to lead these discussions each week.

The course will host up to 10 participants in this session; currently, six spots are still open. To learn more visit Cityofmontevallo.com/CO.STARTERS.aspx or visit the Montevallo Main Street Facebook page and go to events.

MONTEVALLO – Falcon Art Supply in Montevallo has been an anchor business on Main Street for 10 years now. From the beginning, store manager Becky Cox Rodgers and her sidekick Fossy the art store dog, have made sure that it serves the university as well as the community at large.

Owners Phil and Suzanne Hurst started out with the Blue Phrog Gallery further up Main and eventually saw the opportunity to provide the students of the large art department at the university with a much more convenient place to purchase the supplies they needed for their course work.

When the building became available for purchase, the Hursts decided to jump on the idea and asked their long-time friend, and fellow alum Rodgers, who happened to be an art major, if she would run such a store for them. They opened their doors on Aug. 23 of 2012. For a decade now, Rogers has run the Falcon Art Supply store, while Suzanne has run the Blue Phrog Gallery.

Rogers works closely with the university professors to create “kits” for the courses the students take and then makes them available to the students through the school bookstore so that scholarship funds can be used for the materials.

Over the years their reputation has brought them business from far beyond the university clientele and into other regions of the state as far as the University of Alabama, and even south into Prattville and Wetumpka.

In their 10 years of business, they’ve managed to survive the great recession, a major reworking of the streetscape of Main Street that forced them to bring in their business through the back entrance, and the pandemic.

Rodgers said that one of her favorite things to do for customers is custom framing because it’s so personal that they can do more than just sell framing. They can also do repairs and have more available to make the work more personal.

“I also really enjoy helping customers find just the right materials for their art,” Rogers said. “It’s not just watercolor, graphite or oil anymore. There is so much mixed media now. People are doing things that have never been done before and helping them find what will work best for them is kind of neat and keeps me reading and up to date on materials.”

Rodgers also said that they have always managed to stay priced competitively.

“Just because we are a small business doesn’t mean we are more expensive,” Rogers said. “We buy from the same wholesalers that the big stores buy from.”

Owner Suzanne credits Rodgers with the success of the store.

“She’s done a lot to build our business here, and come up with ways to make sure we are relevant when classes aren’t in session too, with the custom framing for instance,” Suzanne said. “Becky had a strong presence in the community before we even knew her and that has made all the difference. She’s amazing.”

Those interested in stopping by Falcon Art Supply and letting Rodgers and Fossy, known for security and service, help find the right thing for a special project can also visit them on their Facebook page by the same name.

HOOVER – Another business has opened in the new Cahaba Market development on U.S. 280.

An outdoor kitchen company called Paradise Grills opened a new showroom in the space next to Five Guys Burgers and Fries on Friday, Aug. 5.

The showroom is the company’s first location in Alabama.

“We’ve had a great amount of traffic,” Showroom Manager Justin Douglas said. “We look forward to continuing with the momentum.”

As a patio furniture manufacturer, Paradise Grills carries a wide variety of outdoor kitchens and barbecue grills, fireplaces and fire pits.

Douglas said the outdoor kitchens are prefabricated, which means customers do not have to obtain building permits for them.

The delivery time frame is five to 10 business days, and outdoor kitchens are assembled the same day they are delivered, Douglas said.

Hoover’s Paradise Grills showroom is open seven days a week, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and is located at 5413 U.S. 280 Suite 104 in Hoover.

Cahaba Market is a 12,600-square-foot retail development located near the intersection of U.S. 280 and Alabama 119, next to Cavender’s.

Cahaba Market is also home to a location of the Dunkin’ donut and coffee chain.

Dunkin’ opened in early February, joining multiple locations in Alabama and other states such as Tennessee, North Carolina, Georgia and Kansas.

In addition to Dunkin’, other tenants include Anatole’s Bike Shop, Jersey Mike’s Subs and My Eyelab.

COLUMBIANA A new bird supply store in downtown Columbiana already has residents chirping.

Khristen Smith opened Sweet Tweets on Saturday, Aug. 6 after noticing a need for such a store in the area.

“For the past two or three years I have gone all the way to Hoover to get quality bird seed,” Smith said. “I noticed we did not have a store around here. We needed one.”

Smith said many people got into birdwatching as a hobby during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“When COVID first started, everyone got into bird watching, myself included,” Smith said. “I feel like a lot of people went to birdwatching, and there’s definitely a need for this around here.”

Smith hopes to get involved with organizations in the area such as King’s Home.

“I definitely want to get involved with the kids, foster kids,” Smith said. “I really want to hit that part of our community because I feel like there’s a need. I want to invest in those types of people.”

Smith also hopes to encourage local artists around the area to put their work on display.

“I want to get involved with all of our local artists, and I want them to put their things in here on consignments,” Smith said. “I want the bird houses, I want the homemade bird feeders, I want all of that stuff in here so that this building can become a community building.”

Smith has big aspirations for Sweet Tweets to serve residents in the Columbiana and throughout Shelby County.

“I would like to partner with the Oak Mountain wildlife center, I want to have something for the kids, showings to show the different kinds of birds,” Smith said. “I think that would be great for the city of Columbiana and the county as a whole.”

Sweet Tweets is located on Columbiana Main Street across from Leaders’ Corner Coffee and Tea.

“Chicken bog is a very popular dish in the Low Country,” The Boss Bogg owner Michelle Fleming says. “In a matter of speaking, you could call it South Carolina's version of jambalaya.”

CALERA—If someone offered you a serving of chicken bog, your mouth might not water at the first thought of the dish in question. Michelle Fleming hopes to change that.

“The Low Country is boggy and marshy,” explains the South Carolina native. “It’s called chicken bog because the chicken and the sauce are bogged down into the rice. It’s rice, chicken and all-beef sausage, herbs and spices, but it’s not spicy.”

Fleming, owner of food truck The Boss Bogg and More LLC, was born and raised in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where she spent most of her life until moving to Alabama about three years ago. Chicken bog is among the most popular dishes she serves, and the dish is her tribute to Anudria Price, with whom Fleming worked at the House of Blues in her hometown.

“Chicken bog is a very popular dish in the Low Country,” Fleming says. “In a matter of speaking, you could call it South Carolina’s version of jambalaya.”

She goes on to detail how the dish is served with two buttermilk cornbread pancakes, homemade collards in honor of Anudria, and Tabasco sauce on the side.

“Some people like to spice it up and some people don’t,” Fleming says.

The Boss Bogg got its start at Sage Bar & Grill in Calera, where Fleming cooked for owner Katie Troncale on and off for about six months. When she pitched the idea for a food truck to Troncale, everything seemed to fall into place for both entrepreneurs.

The Boss Bogg and More first opened for business on Jan. 23, 2022, and currently operates in Calera, Alabaster and Montevallo. The name comes from a combination of chicken bog (note the added extra ‘g’) and Fleming’s Old English Bulldog, ‘The Boss,’ who has become the face of the food truck.

“It worked out very well for both of us,” Fleming said of Troncale. “When she first opened, I helped her with a great deal of her recipes. We both are two women in a really tough business, and we kind of saw that in each other. Katie is a little younger, but man I respect her tenacity and her will. She literally dreamed up the concept of Sage and she is doing it.”

Fleming operates the food truck with her significant other, Derek Richter, as well as her two daughters, Hannah and Haily. She credits Richter with helping her to dream up the idea, which they did together at his father’s house over several evenings.

Everything on the menu is a tribute to someone who helped Fleming along the way, going back to her childhood in North Myrtle Beach when she was her mother’s “right hand,” being the only daughter among five children.

“It was me and my mother in the kitchen and sometimes my father too,” she says, adding, “Everything on my menu I have learned from someone else throughout my years just being taught different things, whether it was my mother, my father, coworkers or my bosses. I don’t take any of the credit.”

Items that pay tribute to her parents include Mom’s Meatloaf and Daddy’s Cole Slaw, the latter of which is served with the Little River Fish or Fried Shrimp Plate.

Another popular menu item is the Bacon Mac & Cheese Burger, a double stack with fresh ground chuck, cheddar cheese, bacon and topped with homemade mac and cheese and Boss Sauce, which is described as “kind of like a barbecue but not really a barbecue.”

“Everything I do is homemade, nothing from a can or a box, and I think people can taste it,” Fleming says.

The wait for Slice Stone Pizza and Brewhouse to open in Montevallo is finally over.

MONTEVALLO – The wait for Slice Stone Pizza and Brewhouse to open in Montevallo is finally over.

Customers started to arrive shortly after the restaurant opened to the public at 11 a.m. Monday, July 25 at the corner of Ashville Road and Wadsworth Street.

“We’re so excited,” Montevallo resident Claire Edwards said. “We’ve been waiting for it to open.”

Slice shared plans for a Montevallo location in 2019, but a combination of factors delayed progress on the restaurant, originally founded in Birmingham by brothers Jeff, Jason and Chris Bajalieh.

One factor was the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

Then, Jeff died in December 2021 after a battle with cancer, leaving Jason and Chris to determine the restaurant’s next steps.

Despite the setbacks, they knew the Montevallo community had not given up hope that Slice would finish construction and open someday.

“People really wanted it,” Chris said. “We have just been overwhelmed with the outreach and support in the Montevallo area. We fell in love with the city before we opened.”

Not surprisingly, feedback from customers—and employees—on July 25 reflected the sense of excitement Slice has created in Montevallo.

Edwards’s mother-in-law, Rita Edwards, said she likes the variety of local ingredients Slice uses on its pizzas.

And it’s the local, seasonal ingredients that Slice’s leaders claim set their specialty pizzas, salads and desserts apart.

“We have what we consider craft pizza,” Slice COO Jerry Bajalia said at a Montevallo Chamber of Commerce luncheon on Wednesday, July 20. “We use artisan dough, we use wood fire and all the ingredients are fresh. We’re working on something that we’re going to call ‘The Montevallo.’”

Slice also offers options for customers with dietary restrictions, which Claire said she appreciates, noting the restaurant’s gluten-free options.

Jackson Holsomback, a server at Montevallo’s Slice, said he has heard only good feedback on the restaurant’s food and service thus far.

After two weeks of training, Holsomback and his coworkers had the chance to ease into their new roles during a soft opening for their family and friends on Sunday, July 24.

“Yesterday went really well,” Holsomback said on July 25. “I have a good feeling we’re going to be pretty busy the next few weeks. I’m super excited for today.”

Aspen Snow, also a server, expressed excitement for the restaurant’s opening, too.

“I’m so happy to be here,” Snow said. “Not only is the building unlike anything else, but the food is unlike anything else.”

Montevallo’s Slice is the third location of the restaurant, joining existing locations in Lakeview and Vestavia Hills.

Chris said the Montevallo location features a service model that blends user-friendly technology with in-person hospitality. For example, customers may order and pay at the table from their devices, or they may order and pay at the counter. In either case, servers are present to deliver food and drinks and attend to any other needs customers might have.

In addition to its craft pizzas and salads, Slice serves a variety of local craft beers, along with wine and mixed drinks.

The restaurant offers ample covered patio seating at the primary building, plus indoor seating in an additional space the owners are renting in the Village on Valley building next door.

Pets are welcome on the patio, too.

Slice’s Montevallo restaurant hours this week only are 4-8 p.m. For future updates regarding business hours, visit the Slice Pizza & Brew Facebook page.

The location also offers takeout and delivery services.

“So far so good, and the support has been overwhelming,” Chris said. “We’re excited to finally be there. Montevallo is a great city and has a lot to offer.”

MONTEVALLO – A craft pizza place with Birmingham roots is about to make its much-anticipated debut in Montevallo.

Slice Stone Pizza and Brewhouse will open at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 25 at the corner of Ashville Road and Wadsworth Street.

“We’re just glad to be a part of the community,” Slice COO Jerry Bajalia said at a Montevallo Chamber of Commerce luncheon on Wednesday, July 20. “We’re glad we finally got there. You guys are our big step forward after all of the things that have happened.”

The plans to open a Montevallo location of Slice were made public in 2019, but a combination of factors delayed progress on the restaurant.

One factor was the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

Then, Jeff Bajalieh, one of Slice’s founders, died in December 2021 after battling cancer.

“We honestly didn’t know how much further we were going to go without him,” Jerry Bajalia said. “Things have worked out. Slice has a bright future, and you guys are a big part of it.”

Bajalia said Montevallo’s Slice is the third location of the restaurant, joining existing locations in Lakeview and Vestavia.

The restaurant prides itself on using local, seasonal ingredients to create specialty pizzas, salads and desserts.

“We have what we consider craft pizza,” Bajalia said. “We use artisan dough, we use wood fire and all the ingredients are fresh. We’re working on something that we’re going to call ‘The Montevallo.’”

Slice also offers options for customers with dietary restrictions.

“We have a cauliflower crust, and we also have vegan cheese,” Bajalia said. “The Very Veggie pizza looks like a salad on a pizza.”

Regarding beverages, Slice serves a variety of local craft beers, along with wine and mixed drinks.

The restaurant will offer ample patio seating in the primary building, plus indoor seating in a space the owners are renting in the Village on Valley building next door.

Pets are welcome on the patio, too.

Slice’s Montevallo restaurant hours will be 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekends, but Bajalia said they might adjust the hours later depending on community response.

“We’re thankful for the opportunity,” Bajalia said. “You guys are the reason we’re here.”
